Fun or Function: Does Coworking Need a Reality Check?

The reimagining of the workplace has happened and there are many people that are choosing to work in a coworking setting today. Many business theorists are considering this to be the future of office spaces. Coworking spaces are finding more success as they offer greater amenities to their clients. A modern coworking space includes not only a desk but a place for community, collaborative spaces to work and affordable amenities for improving business productivity. Even though coworking can seem like it has nothing but upsides, there could be a problem brewing with the idea of this office style, especially when it comes to the long-term sustainability of this type of office location.

Many people see these office spaces for the collaborative and energetic spaces that they can be for a business. At times however a coworking space can be nothing more than a club house. It is a place to relax and play video games in the lounge or to meet and interact with other interesting people. The fun that coworking spaces can bring, will often make it difficult to work.

Not every coworking space is considered equal. There are some models that are shaking up the idea of coworking and marketing their services to executives, some that are marketing to freelancers and some that would like to market to people working in specific industries. New coworking spaces are also offering customers distraction free private office environments.

Balancing Productivity and Amenities

Finding the balance between unlimited amenities, fun and productivity often comes down to coworking spaces that have locations for focus and productivity. As a coworking space begins to address their layout and creates a location that offers amenities with highly functional workspaces, employees can thrive.

As the industry continues to adapt we will see coworking spaces that are built with fun in mind, some built for productivity and some that find a true balance between a creative and exciting space and a functional workplace.
